Take a day trip to Whiskey Falls…
Come visit Whiskey Falls and the surrounding high country area in the Sierra National Forest. You can experience some cooler weather and more wildflowers than you can count! Reach it from Bass Lake area or from North Fork,….the Sierra Vista Scenic Loop is where you head up from either of those spots.
This scene will be your reward!
In summer, the water does decrease and give the effect of strings of jewels cascading down. Visiting the Falls is a breeze to visit because it doesn’t require any hiking to see. You do drive on a dirt road for a ways to get here, but any car can make it.
On the way,…stop and see Peckinpah meadow, where the Peckinpah Family had a logging mill back in the early 1900s.
Whiskey Falls has a cumulative drop of 40ft over two tiers of water-smoothed granite slabs.
Camping anyone?
Whiskey Falls campground is a shady, woodsy retreat for overnights or picnics. The Falls are a 2 minute walk over a bridge.
The stream coming out from the Falls runs through the campground offering cool, serene shade.
If you camp at Bass Lake, it’s an hour side trip and well worth it for a high mountain picnic with less crowds, in fact we rarely see anyone there!
We love to take our dog, Maggie, roam around looking at the native wildflowers, taking photos and just enjoying the cool when it’s 100º at the lake. It’s a place we’ve taken all of our family and visiting friends for years and years. I’m so glad to share this ‘secret spot.’
Secret side trip to one hundred years ago…
Not far away is this secret bark cabin,…one hundred years old. Privately owned all these years by the same family, this cabin has stood the test of time, situated on a huge expanse of granite. Grinding holes are nearby, sparking your imagination and thoughts to even longer ago and the women who made this place their kitchen.
