In praise of Intermountain Nursery

Celebrating a fine nursery…

Have you been here?  I hope so! We are very fortunate to have a nursery nearby that purchases and grows plants that are perfect for our foothill gardens.  Besides having a wide variety of California native and drought tolerant Mediterranean plants, Bonnie Bladen, her husband Ray Laclergue and their staff are extremely knowledgeable about what plants are most suitable for our area and altitude.

Besides all this, it’s a simply beautiful setting, shady and colorful, with the plants grouped along pathways and marked clearly with plant information you need.  Bonnie and Ray operate their 34 year old nursery on 5 acres of land in Prather, California where they grow most all their own bedding plants and container stock and are one of the few outstanding nurseries offering native and Mediterraneans plant in Central California.

Take a look around…

Harvest and Peace Festival every October

Besides all this there are classes and music events held every year along with my absolute favorite, the Harvest and Peace Festival held this Saturday and Sunday.

Browse the craft and food booths or bring a lunch and sit at the picnic tables to eat while watching the musicians play throughout the day  Everyone is so friendly at this event, sharing tables, meeting new people and seeing neighbors and friends.

I plan to do my Fall plant buying on this day,…a true celebration for me as the Festival always falls on my birthday weekend.  Oh, joy,…it’s almost here!

Sue, thanks for posting such a nice article about Intermountain – a great resource for native gardeners! I loved the photo of their native demonstration garden.

Thanks, Susan,…I used to live in Orange County and loved visiting Tree of Life native nursery,..closer to you. I feel lucky that the two neighbors took me on an excursion to Intermountain as soon as we met… Since then I’ve learned so much in my garden laboratory hee next to the forest,…perfect for planting more colorful CA Natives…

Sue, can you come to Park of the Sierra RV Park near Coarsegold to talk to us about native plants and restoring wildflowers? Verna Baker heard you speak on Sunday at True Value and highly recommends you! Please call me at 503-970-9740 or give me your number. I believe with my subscription and this post you have my email. Thank you!

What a great place that looks like. We have several local nurseries with pretty good hired help, but there’s nothing like having the passionate owners at hand to motivate and educate you. I wish more nurseries had demonstration gardens. Rows of gallon cans and little bedding plants have nothing over a real garden space!
